Speedrunning?

Recommended Posts

Summer Games Done Quick is on this week and I made a comment to my partner on 'How long do you think until We Happy Few ends up being played?', but he brought up a good point that you can't really run it because it's procedurally generated.

Apparently some PG games have certain seeds so they're able to have the same layout each time, therefor one certain map becomes the standard for speedrunning.

I was curious if you'd have anything that would allow to keep the same map each time for this sort of thing? I for one would love to see the game get a speedrunning community, and it opens up an extra world of play for it (and you'll get to see your game broken in so many ways).

I work in eSports for another dev house, and one of my idle daydreams has been how WHF could be made into an eSport! For example, I would love (in time) to see a way to generate two identical maps, and have two people proceed through them (each blind to the other's methods) to try to escape as quickly as possible. The game is so great, and there are so many variables that could make a really fun experience - ultra-suspicious Wellies that mean you have to be really careful, only certain items available, character becomes thirsty faster, etc. etc.!

Of course, right now this (likely) isn't a priority, and nor should it be, but I suppose idle speculation and daydreaming is what discussion forums are for!

@oliviagrace Exactly, WHF escape races would be SO cool! It has all the qualities that you'd need to learn and perfect to compete, but then the map-

wait I just remembered Sandbox mode is a thing. Do you think Sandbox mode may allow for one map to be saved? It already allows for you to alter the dangers, items, and what not. If it can save the world, then honestly it'd be so perfect for setting up a race/speedrunning world.

will would there be to much of a disadvantage is the map was random I'm not even sure how to beat the game but the only big problem would be the maze right the one that welcomes downers because if it is just a case of find events to get out then it becomes who knows the best way of doing stuff right? I may be super wrong as the run i just did was the first one where i uncovered the whole map and that ended because I stupid.

@eyeofcrazy Speedrunners/racers would find a way, but it could be an unfair advantage if the map is random and one gets certain obstacles like the Joy Maze. If the Joy Maze was in it and it was the same map, it would be a case of the runners either memorizing the maze or finding a way around it.

The game can throw whatever it likes at the runners, but the important part is that it has to be the same or one person's map rolls could be way easier than the others. It wouldn't be fair, balanced play.

The random seed used to generate the world is saved, as the world is regenerated from it when loading a save game, it's only accessible to us programmers (so we can repeat specific problems) but it would be feasible to allow entering it explicitly on a new game to get the same world.

The problem is that it's not just the world that is random: the loot, the spawning of AI in the streets, and the behaviours in general are not deterministic.

The loot for instance is not generated when the world is, the "die" is cast when the player opens a container, so even if the seed was the same the order of looting would affect which items you get.

It would require a lot of effort to make the game consistent enough for a speed run, the idea is great though :)
