I'm probably reaching, but perhaps it's a mechanic that's not been mentioned; have you tried to craft a new suit to wear, for example? And do they attack while you're on Joy/Sunshine? Also, what level of difficulty are you playing at?

Leaving those locked cabinets behind as I ran the opening sequence still gives me sleepless nights! My kingdom for a starter lockpick!

I am truly very sorry for console players who are having a terrible time of it - it must be incredibly frustrating. For my part, as a PC player, I've encountered nothing gamebreaking and am enjoying my journey immensely.
